A 5-way tie for first place created the need for an extended round of blitz matches to name winners. Based on ranking, Deron and Garth played for the right to play Tony. Deron advanced to the next round with Tony. Roger and Paul played in the second round and Roger won that exchange. Tony and Deron played in the second round and Tony won that exchange. In the third round Tony and Roger played for first and second place. Roger won. Deron and Paul played for third place and Paul won.
Roger Patterson won 1st place. He becomes the first person to have his name on the trophy twice. He also takes home the wood board in a gortex bag and triple weighted Alegria pieces from Legend Chess equipment.
Tony Weller visiting from Brisbane Australia won 2nd place. He takes home the Conqueror chess pieces in a fine mahogany box from the Chess Store in Portland.
Paul LeBlanc our 1st place winner last year won 3rd place this year and also took home a boxed set from the Chess Store.
Patrick Huang was our top junior player and won a boxed set from the Chess Store.
Lucette Fuerst once again was the only woman so her name goes on the trophy again. That should be the 4th time since she missed one tournament. C'mon ladies! Lets give her some competition. She has won so many prizes that we decided to award a third place prize in the open section and just give her the trophy again for this year.
The biggest upsets in the tournament were Tony's win over Roger in round 4 and Deron's win over Tony in round 3. Alan McEwen is a new member of the Bishops of Bowser. He is from Qualicum Beach. Although he struggled in each game, he performed well and we a happy to have him as a club member and competitor in the tournament. Another new member of the Bishops of Bowser came as a spectator. Tony Homer is also from Qualicum Beach. We look forward to having him as a tournament competitor in the future. Nikolas and Garth came from Victoria for their first visit to Bowser and their first entry in the Bowser Builders Tournament. Deron Stewart from the Nanaimo Chess Club also entered for the first time.
I served as Tournament Director and used Swiss Sys 7 pairing software for the first time. It certainly made pairing and printing reports a breeze. The "F" values in the cross-table should show that Dave withdrew in the 4th round and that I took a bye. There is room for improvement in my management of the Swiss Sys software. Thanks are due to Roger and Paul for assistance in organizing and advising how to run the blitz rounds.
I will be uploading annotated photos taken by Paul's wife who graciously shared some fine pictures that she took. I may also upload some video that I took.
Thanks to all who helped to make this a successful tournament. Of course an extra special thanks to the folks at Irly Bowser Builders Supply Mac and Betsy who provided sponsorship for prizes.
