(2 errors in the article: The photo is of Aaron Bruhn not Willem Kuun and obviously to us Elliot is from Victoria not Vancouver. Otherwise it is a nice article and good to have the coverage . . . thanks Pam, you had a lot of detail to keep straight.)
Brian McLaren who to my eye bears a passing resemblance to Shirov won 1st overall. It was an honour to have Brian attend the tournament.
Elliot Raymer won second place.
Willem Kuhn won first place for 15 and under.
Lucette Fuerst reprised her 1st Ladies finish of last year. We do need to attract some more ladies next year.
The Blitz match for first place.
Elliot resigns.
Round 4 Board 1 Paul LeBlanc and Brian McLaren.
Brian prevailed.
Round 4 Board 2, Elliot Raymer and Jason Cao.
It wasn't Jason's best day but he was the only one to squeeze half a point from Brian McLaren.
Lucette watches Brian and Jason.
Two local Bishops, George Green and Wes Pauls.
Elliot Raymer and Brendan Plantinga from Comox.
Brendan takes his chess seriously. Contrary to appearances he was not going to his wedding.
Paul Leblanc and Rick Martinson from Courtenay.
Philip Smithwick from Nanoose and Wes Pauls from Bowser.
Mason Wik from Sherwood Park Alberta and his father.
Jason hams it up for the camera.
Brendan and Brian at Board 1.
Peter Zingeler and Paul LeBlanc.
Peter, Brendan and Philip relax between rounds.
Irene did yeoman service at the registration desk again.
Aaron from Bowser and Mason play between rounds.
Philip and Brendan in foreground. Peter and Nick Peters from Parksville in the background. Also from Parksville is Jordan Lathwell
This was a long and tense game in Round 1 that went full time with only kings were left. Local bishop Willem Kuhn was the only player to hold Elliot to a draw until he met Brian in the final Blitz match.
Wes Pauls a local bishop met Brian in Round 1.
George Green met Paul LeBlanc in Round 1.
Jason and Willem pose.
Registration at the door starts at 9 am.
Timed rounds are 45/5 to provide more time for players than last year's event.
1st Round 10 am
2nd Round 12:30
3rd Round at 2:30 pm
4th Round at 4:30 pm
Rounds 3 and 4 may begin sooner if all contestants are ready to compete.
Trophies and prizes will be awarded after the 4th round is completed.
Should there be a tie for any of the top positions a blitz round will be run to determine the winner.
1st prize overall is a 4" triple-weighted Alegria tournament set from Legend and a full size board with a durable gortex bag. The retail value of this prize is $140 plus shipping.
Our prize board is similar to this but is not a folding board.
We have prizes for 2nd overall, 1st ladies and 1st under 15 years. These are superior chess bags with a vinyl board and the triple-weighted Ultimate chess pieces in natural and black. The retail value of these combos is $78 plus shipping.
